OPINION By Prof. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu The political control of the resources of the territory known as Rivers State in Nigeria’s Niger Delta has been a site of curious jurisprudence since the Acting Consul of the Oil Rivers Protectorate, Harry Johnston, procured the judicial liquidation of King Jaja of Opobo in December 1887 in Accra, present capital of Ghana. The charge against King Jaja was the violation of a treaty obligation to assist the British “in the execution of such duties as may be assigned.” At the end of proceedings which lasted less than one day before a forum described by Elvar Ingimundarsson as a “Kangaroo court”, King Jaja was convicted and sentenced to exile. The court also prohibited the people of Opobo from designating a replacement for him. At the end of Febr...

Courtsey: Realnews A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and political activist, Timi Frank, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by loyalists of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to manipulate the recently delivered Supreme Court judgment in the state. Frank alleged that certain individuals are attempting to insert the issue of defection—currently being litigated at the Appeal Court—into the ruling, in a bid to influence ongoing legal battles. In a statement, Frank described the move as a "desperate lobby to smuggle into the judgment an aspect which was not decided." He claimed that Wike’s allies are behind the effort to tamper with the judgment, which focused on the Rivers State Local Government elections and the budg...

According to the group, Professor Bako misrepresented historical facts at various points in his lecture, and also engaged in typical Igbo profiling, teasing a xenophobic position that negates the integrative spirit of the Nigerian constitution. As an academic advocacy group in part dedicated to understanding the diverse peoples of Nigeria and the broader tapestry of Nigerian history, FOSAD says it had looked forward with great interest when Professor Bako...
