Sixty-nine Nigerian youths of varying academic and professional backgrounds on Wednesday in Port Harcourt underwent kick-off formalities for a 12-month Nigerian Content-Human Capacity Development (NC-HCD) specialised training in digitalisation, with specific emphasis on Python (a high-level programming language), and Cisco networking.
Sponsored by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Renaissance Africa Energy Company (RAEC) Limited, the programme involves structured on-the-job training in key areas such as software development, cybersecurity, and Cisco networking, that is, the use of hardware and software (developed by California-based Cisco Systems) for design, management and trouble-shooting of computer networks. Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Entrepreneurship are equally covered.
Representing the NCDMB, the Manager, HCD, Mrs. Tarilate Teide-Bribena, said the training programme marks a significant milestone in deepening human capital development by bridging identified skill gaps in the oil and gas industry. Trainees, according to her, would be empowered “to play a vital role in safeguarding, optimising, and sustaining Nigeria’s critical energy infrastructure.”
She reiterated that the NCDMB remains unwavering in its mandate to cultivate local talent, maximise indigenous participation within the oil and gas sector, and to open doors that propel national economic growth.
The HCD Manager expressed gratitude to Renaissance Africa for their invaluable partnership and steadfast commitment to fostering homegrown excellence, while encouraging the trainees to “approach the programme with unwavering discipline, deep intellectual curiosity, and fierce determination.”
According to her, “The Nigerian energy landscape is hungry for vibrant talents, disruptive ideas, and bold leadership.”
Renaissance Africa Energy Company, for its part, commended the NCDMB for its strong commitment to capacity building and assured the Board of its total support to its HCD objectives. He said the kick-off ceremony was a continuation of an important journey to develop skilled Nigerian professionals who would drive the growth, innovation and sustainability of the country’s energy industry.
According to Engr. Olabanji Abaisiga, representative of the company, “At Renaissance we believe local content development must create real capability, strengthen indigenous expertise, and empower Nigerians to lead.”
He disclosed that the 69 trainees in Port Harcourt were part of a total of 347 Nigerians drawn from different parts of the country for the NC-HCD programme of the company, and that the larger number were undergoing the training in Lagos. He urged them to approach the opportunity with commitment, discipline and a passion to know.
The trainees are expected to receive Cisco certifications – CCNA-CCNP – for networking professionals at the successful completion of the 12-month programme. Cisco Systems is the world’s largest networking and cybersecurity company.
