According to an article published by Punch Newspapers, the Lagos State Police Command has dispelled fears surrounding a viral video that showed 89 young men arriving in Lagos and assembling in Ibeju-Lekki. Contrary to widespread speculation, the individuals were identified as labourers recruited to work at the Dangote Refinery.
In a statement issued on Friday via X, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the young men had travelled from Katsina State to take up jobs at the refinery. “Upon receipt of the information on May 14, 2025, officers from the Command immediately deployed to the location to ascertain the facts,” the statement read.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the young men in question, 89 in number, had arrived from Katsina State and were recruited to work as labourers at the Dangote Refinery in Lekki,” the police said. The contractor responsible for their recruitment, along with the refinery’s Chief Security Officer, reportedly confirmed that the men were lawfully engaged and authorised to live and work within the refinery premises.
The police also carried out thorough background checks. “The individuals were thoroughly searched, and no incriminating items were found in their possession. Furthermore, each person properly identified themselves and presented their National Identification Numbers (NINs), which were duly verified,” Hundeyin added.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation. “The Command remains committed to maintaining law and order across Lagos State and will continue to respond promptly to all matters relating to public safety,” he said.
The police advised residents to verify information before sharing it, warning against the circulation of alarmist content that could incite unnecessary panic.
