The United States has submitted a revised resolution to the UN Security Council, urging for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip following extensive negotiations. The resolution, disclosed to the press on Tuesday, emphasizes the need for a six-week ceasefire in Gaza and the prompt release of all hostages upon agreement by all parties involved.
The wording of the resolution aligns with statements made by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris over the weekend, who emphasized the urgency of a ceasefire for the next six weeks due to the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with a growing hunger crisis affecting the population. Since the conflict began, over 30,000 people have lost their lives, and more than 70,000 have been injured.
The conflict originated from a significant incident involving Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist organization, and other groups in Israel on October 7, 2023. Despite being Israel’s ally, the United States previously opposed using the term “ceasefire” and vetoed three resolutions in the Security Council. However, given the escalating civilian casualties and the looming threat of famine in Gaza, coupled with the rising tensions in the region, the U.S. is now increasing pressure on Israel.
The draft resolution is subject to modifications by the other 14 members of the Security Council. It remains uncertain when or if a vote will take place. Security Council resolutions carry legal weight under international law, and failure to comply can result in sanctions imposed by the Council.
