WHO CAN EXPLAIN NNPC’S N11.2TRN SECURITY BILL?

Energy
By Hector Igbikiowubo  The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has finally put a number to the black hole that has swallowed Nigeria’s oil wealth for years. In its 2025 audited financial report, the company casually disclosed that it spent a mind-boggling N11.2 trillion to “protect the country’s oil and gas assets on behalf of the Federal Government.” Let that figure sink in. N11.2 trillion. Not billion. Trillion. For a country that is not at war, not under invasion, and not battling a foreign adversary for its oil fields, what exactly was NNPC protecting oil assets from that cost more than one-and-a-half times its entire declared profit for the year? The company declared N7.2 trillion in profit after tax and N34.5 trillion in revenue. Yet it claims to have spe...

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, disclosed the location of the suspected camp while briefing journalists on the search-and-rescue operation. Bosso said operatives had tracked the abductors into the bush before deploying drones...

MALAMI AND THE INFAMY OF NIGERIA’S MAMBILA HYDROPOWER ARBITRATION

MALAMI AND THE INFAMY OF NIGERIA’S MAMBILA HYDROPOWER ARBITRATION

Opinion
By Chidi Anselm Odinkalu OPINION WHEN he announced the military coup in Nigeria on 15 January 1966, Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu denounced a confederacy of “political profiteers, the swindlers, the men in high and low places that seek bribes and demand 10 percent.” At the time, Nigeria was mostly funded by agriculture and solid minerals. Seven years later, that changed. Following the onset of the Arab-Israeli War in October 1973, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) weaponised the price of oil. In the year that followed, oil prices rose over ten times. For oil-producing countries, it was a windfall. Nigeria was one of the beneficiaries of what became known as the “oil boom”. In the words of then military ruler, Yakubu Gowon, our problem wa...

Tinubu’s Endless Vacation: Why Is the President Still Abroad?

Politics
By Rareview President Bola Tinubu has postponed his return to Nigeria yet again, turning what was announced as a three-week working vacation into a nearly month-long absence and raising fresh questions about the whereabouts of the country’s president and the constitutional arrangements governing his stay abroad. Tinubu was expected back in Nigeria this weekend after the Presidency announced last week that he would return following an extension of his European trip. But that plan has now changed. Presidency sources say the president’s return has been pushed to Tuesday, although the reason for the latest change was not immediately disclosed.
