WHAT FUTURE FOR AN INDEPENDENT BAR IN NIGERIA?

WHAT FUTURE FOR AN INDEPENDENT BAR IN NIGERIA?

Opinion
By Chidi Anselm Odinkalu THREE score and three years ago, a defining dispute erupted in the old Western Region of Nigeria over the scope and reach of constitutional conventions in determining or terminating the tenure of high-level political leadership. The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, which ultimately had to pronounce on the matter, described conventions in that case as “a body of understandings which no writer can formulate.” The aftermath of that decision took the country to the brink of ruin. This year, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) confronts its own moment of truth concerning how far conventions initially designed to accommodate national diversity in its leadership processes can be converted into ethno-tribal vetoes by entities that, in f...

GYNAECOLOGIST WARNS AGAINST MISUSE OF CONTRACEPTIVES, URGES WOMEN TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE

Health
By Ali Elias A Consultant Gynaecologist, Dr. Samuel Egbebi, has cautioned young women against the indiscriminate use of contraceptives, warning that while pregnancy prevention drugs are generally safe and effective, misuse or unsupervised use could expose users to avoidable health complications. Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, Egbebi stressed that no contraceptive method is entirely without side effects and advised women to seek medical guidance before choosing any form of family planning. “Contraceptives are an effective means of preventing pregnancy, but each method has its potential side effects and should be used under appropriate medical guidance,” he said. According to the gynaecologist, hormonal contraceptiv...

News
courtesy: COG By Rareview A solitary house stranded between newly constructed road lanes in Jinxi, China, has once again drawn global attention to the country's long-running conflict between rapid urban development and the rights of property owners. Known in China as a "nail house"—a term used to describe properties whose owners refuse to vacate despite surrounding construction—the building has become a striking symbol of resistance against compensation offers deemed inadequate by residents. According to China Daily, property owners are legally entitled to remain on their land until an acceptable compensation agreement is reached. Shen Kui, a law professor at Peking University, said while governments have a legitimate mandate to execute public infrastructure projects, affec...
