The Confederation of African Football Appeal Board has awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title to Morocco following a controversial ruling that overturned the outcome of the final against Senegal.
In a decision that has sparked widespread debate across the footballing community, the Appeal Board ruled that Senegal forfeited the final match after its players temporarily walked off the pitch in protest of a refereeing decision during the game played in Rabat on January 18.
CAF determined that the action constituted a breach of tournament regulations governing unauthorized interruptions of play. As a result, the match was awarded to Morocco on a 3–0 basis, effectively handing the North African side the continental title.
The ruling overturns the original outcome of the match and marks one of the most contentious decisions in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.
In its findings, the Appeal Board emphasised that adherence to competition rules is paramount, particularly in high-stakes fixtures such as a continental final. The panel held that Senegal’s conduct—specifically the temporary withdrawal of players from the field—met the threshold for disciplinary sanctions under CAF statutes.
The decision has, however, triggered intense scrutiny of the Appeal Board itself, with questions emerging over the composition of the panel and the transparency of its deliberations.
Football analysts note that while governing bodies must enforce regulations to maintain order and fairness, decisions of this magnitude inevitably attract heightened public interest and criticism.
“This is the kind of ruling that tests the credibility of institutions,” a sports governance expert said. “CAF must not only apply the rules but also be seen to apply them fairly and transparently.”
For Senegal, popularly known as the Teranga Lions, the ruling represents a significant setback, overturning what had been celebrated as a hard-fought performance in the final. For Morocco, the decision secures a major continental triumph, albeit under contentious circumstances.
The development also raises broader questions about officiating standards, dispute resolution mechanisms, and disciplinary procedures within African football.
Observers argue that the incident underscores the need for clearer protocols around in-game protests and stronger communication between match officials and teams to prevent escalations that could influence match outcomes.
CAF has yet to indicate whether further details on the Appeal Board’s composition or full ruling will be made public. However, the controversy is expected to linger, with calls for greater transparency and possible reforms to disciplinary processes within the organisation.
