JEFFREY N. WEISS, M.D.: REDEFINING THE FRONTIERS OF VISION CARE IN DUBAI

At a time when ophthalmology is being reshaped by advanced microsurgery, bioengineering, and regenerative medicine, Saudi German Hospital, Dubai, continues to strengthen its specialist offerings through globally respected clinician-scientists. One such figure is Dr. Jeffrey N. Weiss, a pioneering retinal surgeon and biomedical innovator whose visiting consultancy at Saudi German Hospital, Dubai began about a year ago.

Dr. Weiss brings to Dubai—and to patients from the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and beyond—a rare combination of clinical excellence, scientific originality, and decades of first-in-the-world breakthroughs in retinal and optic nerve care. His presence reinforces Dubai’s growing role as an international destination for advanced eye treatment, while also opening new pathways of hope for patients with previously untreatable vision loss.

Profile: Jeffrey N. Weiss, M.D.

Jeffrey N. Weiss, M.D., is the former Chief of Retinal Surgery at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Faculty member at Harvard Medical School, and a former Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A prodigy by any measure, Dr. Weiss entered college at the age of 16 and medical school at just 19, both on full scholarships. While still in medical school, he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering, graduating Magna Cum Laude with distinction, and went on to complete medical school Summa Cum Laude at the age of 23.

Dr. Weiss is the author of more than 100 scientific publications, including 28 books, and holds over 24 U.S. and international patents. He has also served as a peer reviewer for multiple scholarly journals. His academic and clinical career has taken him across continents as a Visiting Professor, surgeon, and lecturer, addressing both national and international audiences.

Among his landmark contributions, Dr. Weiss was the first physician to invent the equipment and develop the technique for safe retinal vessel cannulation—a procedure that remains the only effective surgical option for patients suffering from severe “stroke in the eye.” He was also the first to report the successful use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in treating dry age-related macular degeneration and long-standing central retinal artery occlusion.

In 2010, Dr. Weiss performed the first retinal stem cell surgery in the world, marking a historic milestone in regenerative ophthalmology. He currently serves as the Principal Investigator of the Stem Cell Ophthalmology Treatment Studies I and II—the largest retinal and optic nerve stem cell studies globally—as well as the Neurologic Stem Cell Treatment Study. These studies are Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved, registered with the National Institutes of Health, and ClinicaTtrials.gov
