NNPC REPORTS ₦5.76TRN PROFIT FOR 2025, FLAGS MAINTENANCE IMPACT ON DECEMBER OUTPUT

Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited recorded a profit after tax of ₦5.76 trillion for the 2025 financial year, underscoring strong earnings performance despite a dip in crude and condensate production in December linked to planned and unplanned operational outages.

The company disclosed the figures in its Monthly Report Summary for December 2025, which also shows full-year revenue of ₦60.517 trillion and statutory payments totalling ₦14.706 trillion.

Production Declines at Year-End

Crude oil and condensate production averaged 1.54 million barrels per day in December, down from earlier months in the year and below the 2025 peak of 1.77 million barrels per day. The company attributed the December performance to planned maintenance at Stardeep-Agbami and Renaissance Estuary Area facilities, as well as unplanned production outages.

Natural gas production remained comparatively resilient at 6,914 million standard cubic feet per day, reflecting the company’s continued strategic emphasis on gas development.

Upstream pipeline availability stood at 100 per cent at year-end, signalling improved operational stability across critical infrastructure.

Earnings Momentum Despite Volatility

NNPC’s monthly financial performance showed fluctuating profitability through 2025, with December profit recorded at ₦351 billion, while revenue for the month stood at ₦4.824 trillion.

Industry analysts note that the strong annual earnings reflect improved commercial discipline following NNPC’s transition into a limited liability company, although production reliability remains a structural challenge.

Strategic Gas Infrastructure Advances

The report highlights continued progress on key gas infrastructure projects central to Nigeria’s domestic supply expansion and energy transition strategy.

On the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline, NNPC confirmed successful completion of mainline welding, with efforts underway to finalise installation of associated systems. Early works on the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) pipeline River Niger crossing have also been completed, with pilot hole drilling commenced.

Pipeline readiness remains high, with AKK at 91 per cent and OB3 at 96 per cent completion status.

Domestic Supply and Retail Operations

NNPC reported 65 per cent nationwide availability of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) across its retail network in December, indicating moderate downstream supply stability.

Social Investment and Enterprise Support

Through the NNPC Foundation, the company disbursed ₦531,000 each to beneficiaries under its Youth Empowerment Programme implemented in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps, aimed at supporting small business development and employment generation.

Business Desk Analysis

NNPC’s 2025 performance reflects a dual operational reality: strong financial outcomes supported by revenue scale and gas expansion, alongside persistent upstream production volatility.

Gas output stability and infrastructure progress position the company to deepen domestic gas utilisation and industrial energy supply. However, recurring maintenance-related disruptions highlight the need for sustained upstream investment and asset optimisation.

Business Outlook

Looking ahead, the company’s operational trajectory in 2026 will depend largely on production stability, timely completion of gas infrastructure, and improved distribution efficiency across downstream operations. If pipeline projects reach full operational capacity and maintenance cycles stabilise production assets, NNPC could enter the new fiscal period with stronger revenue predictability and enhanced energy supply resilience.

Nonetheless, output reliability, infrastructure security and global price volatility remain defining variables for performance sustainability.
