The Federal Government has begun disbursing the sum of ₦44,000 in minimum wage arrears to former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), delivering on a long-promised financial commitment tied to the recent wage review.
The payment applies specifically to corps members who completed their service before the new ₦77,000 monthly allowance took effect earlier in the year. Prior to the adjustment, the NYSC monthly stipend stood at ₦33,000.
The move comes as a fulfillment of a pledge made by the government to ensure that past corps members, who served under the old allowance rate, are not left out of the financial upgrade.
Widespread Excitement Online
Several beneficiaries have confirmed receipt of the payment via X (formerly Twitter), with reactions ranging from joyful disbelief to renewed hope in government responsiveness.
“Thank you NYSC. Thank you President Tinubu. Nigeria will be great again,” tweeted @Kingpin_black1.
“44k don land. NYSC no carry last. God bless Nigeria,” wrote @pharmacist_shezzy, celebrating the unexpected windfall.
The prompt disbursement of the arrears has earned praise from young Nigerians, many of whom had expressed skepticism over whether the promise would materialize.
Symbol of Renewed Trust?
Analysts and public commentators see the move as more than just financial; it signals a gesture of accountability and goodwill, especially toward Nigeria’s youth population—a demographic critical to national development and political stability.
For many young Nigerians, especially those facing post-service unemployment or financial strain, the ₦44,000 payment is a lifeline and a morale boost. For others, it’s a long-overdue acknowledgment of their service to the nation.
The National Youth Service Corps has yet to release a formal statement on the total number of beneficiaries or disbursement timeline, but sources suggest the payments will continue in batches over the coming weeks.
