Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has returned from a solemn visit to the Vatican and is calling on Nigerians to shift focus from political speculation to the moral message delivered by Pope Leo XIV.
In a statement posted on X , Obi emphasized that his trip was not a political event, but a spiritual engagement meant for reflection.
“My participation in the inauguration ceremony was in line with my previous witnessing of inaugurations, swearing-ins, and official ceremonies across the world—this was no exception,” Obi stated.
He clarified that he did not meet Pope Leo XIV, as the Papal Audience was reserved strictly for heads of state and accredited diplomats.
“Some moments are best reserved for quiet contemplation,” he noted.
Obi urged Nigerians to pay attention to Pope Leo XIV’s homily, which he described as a moral charge to fight poverty and promote unity beyond political, religious, and ethnic boundaries.
“What should truly command our attention is the content and moral force contained in the Pope’s homily… The fight against corruption is the essential first step toward building societies where resources are directed to what truly matters—education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure.”
Obi concluded his statement with a call to national moral renewal, urging citizens and leaders alike to act on the Pope’s message.
“May we, in whatever station we occupy, rise to the task of building a more just, compassionate, and prosperous nation.”
