PA AYO ADEBANJO: A TRUE NATIONALIST AND TITAN OF JUSTICE, DEMOCRACY, AND NATIONAL UNITY BOWS OUT

In the annals of Nigeria’s political history, few names resonate with unwavering dedication to justice, democracy, and national unity like Pa Ayo Adebanjo. The leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, and a stalwart of progressive politics, has departed this world at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy etched in the struggle for equity and truth.

Born into an era marked by colonial rule, Pa Adebanjo dedicated his life to the pursuit of a just and egalitarian Nigeria. A lawyer, nationalist, and political strategist, he was among the foremost disciples of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, playing a pivotal role in the formation and operation of the Action Group (AG) and later the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). His principled stance on national issues remained steadfast through Nigeria’s various political epochs.

A statement released by his family, signed by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, confirmed that the revered elder statesman passed away peacefully on Friday, February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos. The family acknowledged his lifelong dedication to justice and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of condolences from across the nation.

Tributes have since poured in from various quarters, reflecting the profound impact of his life. Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, described Adebanjo as “a great pillar in the struggle for a new Nigeria,” recalling the elder statesman’s unwavering support during his campaign. “His endorsement was not merely a political gesture but a testament to his belief in the ideals of equity and inclusiveness,” Obi stated, further recalling Adebanjo’s parting words to him: ‘Always stand on the path of justice.’

Similarly, former Ohanaeze Ndigbo president general, John Nnia Nwodo, hailed Adebanjo as “an exceptional nationalist whose unwavering commitment to justice and equity stood him out as a hero of the struggle for a greater Nigeria.” Nwodo emphasized that Adebanjo’s fearless stance on national unity and restructuring was crucial in forging an inclusive Nigeria. “He was never intimidated by threats or lured by material inducements; he stood firm in his convictions, guided by integrity and principle.”

President Bola Tinubu, in his tribute, described Adebanjo’s demise as a “profound loss to Nigeria.” Acknowledging his decades of unwavering advocacy for justice and democracy, Tinubu recalled Adebanjo’s crucial role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the military era, which helped pave the way for the return of democratic governance. “Baba was a lawyer, statesman, and politician who stood among the last of a generation of nationalists and independent heroes who shaped the foundation of our country,” the President noted.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Adebanjo’s forthright nature. “He was a courageous and principled leader who spoke the truth without fear or favor. Whether it was in the days of Pa Awolowo or during the struggle for democracy, he was fearless in the trenches, fighting for justice and the blessings it promises.”

Throughout his life, Adebanjo remained a firm advocate for restructuring and true federalism, believing it to be the only path to sustainable peace and development in Nigeria. Even in his later years, he continued to lend his voice to national discourse, offering incisive commentary on issues of governance and social justice. His ability to challenge the status quo, regardless of political alliances, earned him respect across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and political landscape.

As Nigeria bids farewell to this indefatigable advocate for justice, one thing remains certain: the ideals Pa Ayo Adebanjo championed—equity, democracy, and national unity—will continue to inspire generations to come. His passing may mark the end of an era, but his legacy will forever illuminate the path toward a just and truly united Nigeria.
