FEAR GRIPS ALIMOSHO AS RESIDENTS WARN OF ALLEGED KIDNAP CASES LINKED TO COMMERCIAL BUSES

Residents of Alimosho Local Government Area have been urged to exercise heightened vigilance when boarding commercial vehicles following the circulation of a security notice warning of alleged kidnapping incidents across several communities in the Lagos area.

The notice, widely shared on social media platforms over the weekend, cautioned residents to carefully observe commercial vehicles, particularly the popular “Korope” mini-buses, before boarding them. It specifically referenced reports of alleged kidnappings around Pako and Baruwa, extending through the Iyana Ipaja and Ikotun axis, as well as Egbeda Gate Bus Stop, Moshalasi and adjoining neighbourhoods.

The alert, titled “Alimosho Alert,” described reports of kidnappings in the area as “alarming” and advised residents to remain security conscious while commuting.

Although the claims contained in the notice could not be independently verified as of press time, the message has heightened concerns among residents of Nigeria’s most populous local government area, where millions rely daily on commercial buses and tricycles for transportation.

Several residents who spoke with our correspondent expressed apprehension over the warning, noting that economic hardship and rising insecurity across parts of the country have made citizens increasingly cautious.

A trader at the Egbeda axis, who requested anonymity, said the alert had prompted many commuters to scrutinise vehicles before boarding.

“People are now looking twice before entering any bus. Whether the reports are true or not, residents are becoming more careful,” she said.

The emergence of the warning comes against the backdrop of growing concerns about kidnapping and abduction cases across Nigeria. Security experts have warned that criminal gangs traditionally active in the North and parts of the Middle Belt are increasingly extending operations into southern states. Recent incidents in Oyo State and attacks on commuters along major highways have reinforced public anxiety about the spread of kidnapping-for-ransom networks.

In Lagos, however, the State Police Command has repeatedly maintained that it remains proactive in tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes. The command recently announced major operational successes, including the foiling of kidnap attempts, the arrest of suspects and the deployment of intelligence-led policing strategies across the state.

The police have also cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified security information capable of creating unnecessary panic. Earlier this week, the command reassured residents that there was no verified intelligence indicating any imminent large-scale attack in the state, while affirming that additional security measures had been deployed around vulnerable locations as a precaution.

Security observers nevertheless advise residents to remain vigilant while avoiding panic. They recommend boarding vehicles only at recognised bus stops, taking note of vehicle registration numbers where possible, informing relatives of travel plans, and promptly reporting suspicious movements to law enforcement agencies.

As concern continues to spread across Alimosho communities, residents are calling on security agencies to investigate the claims contained in the viral alert and provide clear information capable of reassuring the public.

For now, commuters across the Pako, Baruwa, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun, Egbeda and Moshalasi corridors are being urged to stay alert and cooperate with security agencies in the collective effort to keep the area safe.
