The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has appointed Professor Kamoru Olayiwola Usman as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), marking the first time a Yoruba scholar has held the position. The appointment, made by Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Oguejiofo T. Ujam, reflects ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and academic excellence.
“The appointment of Professor Usman reflects our resolve to prioritize competence over sectional considerations,” said Professor Ujam. “It is imperative that we sustain this culture of inclusivity and meritocracy to move the university forward.”
Professor Usman, a Mathematics Education expert and former Provost of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo State, is a fellow of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria. His initial two-year tenure is renewable based on performance.
In addition to this historic appointment, Dr. Mansur Adebowale Saddiq was named Acting Director of the Medical Centre, reinforcing the university’s commitment to excellence over sectional interests.
Speaking at a recent University Senate meeting, Professor Ujam stressed the need for collective responsibility in repositioning UNN. “A collective effort is required to place the institution on a steady path towards ethical and innovative learning. We must rid the system of narrow-minded sectionalism and divisive tendencies that have eroded our academic environment,” he stated.
He also emphasized the importance of adapting to global educational trends, particularly in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, and commended Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his support in advocating experiential learning. “We must align with this vision to ensure our students are not left behind in the evolving global education landscape,” he added.
This development is a significant step in fostering merit-based leadership in Nigerian universities, setting a precedent for other institutions to prioritize competence and inclusivity in academic governance.
