PETER OBI WARNS LABOUR PARTY LAWMAKERS: “DO NOT BETRAY DEMOCRACY”

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged members of his party in the National Assembly to stand firm against actions that threaten Nigeria’s democracy, particularly in light of the unfolding political crisis in Rivers State.

In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi expressed concern over what he described as a “deteriorating democratic process”, citing electoral malpractice, disregard for educational qualifications for leadership positions, and the unconstitutional removal of elected officials as dangerous trends undermining the country’s democracy.

Addressing Labour Party lawmakers directly, Obi reminded them of their responsibility to protect the will of the people. “Since your inauguration as Distinguished and Honourable Members of the National Assembly, I have refrained from interfering in your legislative affairs out of respect for your independence and to allow you to focus on alleviating the suffering of the Nigerian people,” he said.

However, he explained that the current political situation in the country had made it necessary for him to speak out. “At this critical juncture—following 26 years of a deteriorating democratic process marked by disregard for educational qualifications for electoral positions, massive rigging, and now the unconstitutional removal of elected officeholders—I find it necessary to address you,” Obi stated.

“Do Not Betray the People’s Mandate”

Obi warned lawmakers against taking actions that could “compromise the integrity of our democracy” or “undermine the interests of the people of Rivers State.” He urged them to remain committed to fairness, equity, and transparency, rather than yielding to political pressure.

“I urge you to stand as true defenders of justice. Do not participate in or support any action, decision, or vote that compromises the integrity of our democracy, undermines the interests of the people of Rivers State, or contradicts our core values of fairness, equity, and transparency,” he cautioned.

He further advised them against allowing themselves to become tools for undemocratic forces, stating: “We must not allow ourselves to become instruments of injustice or contribute to the betrayal of the people’s mandate.”

The Implications for Rivers State and Nigeria

Obi’s message comes amid growing concerns over the political instability in Rivers State, where allegations of unconstitutional removals of elected officials have sparked national debate. His warning suggests that such actions could set a dangerous precedent, further eroding public trust in the democratic process.

He made it clear that lawmakers must prioritize the people’s welfare over political convenience. “At this moment, we must prioritize what is right over what is wrong or convenient, remaining steadfast in defending the well-being of the people of Rivers State,” he said.
