Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, has called on young entrepreneurs and scholars to rise above challenges and pursue their ambitions with determination. He made this call on Wednesday while addressing a delegation of scholars from Harvard Kennedy School during their visit to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals complex and Dangote Fertiliser Limited in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos.
Speaking to the 50 scholars from 18 different nationalities, Dangote emphasized the importance of ambition, resilience, and the drive to create lasting impact. He pointed to the construction of the world’s largest single-train refinery as an example of what is possible with a “can-do” spirit.
“Life is not worth living without ambition. In this life, nothing is impossible. Don’t allow fear to hold you back. Be knowledgeable about the business you want to pursue. I am not an engineer, but I don’t engage in any business I don’t understand.”
Overcoming Challenges to Build Africa’s Largest Refinery
During the interactive session, which lasted over 40 minutes, Dangote shared insights into the challenges he faced in executing the $19 billion refinery project. He recalled how many doubted the feasibility of such a massive endeavor, with some arguing that only governments, not private individuals, could build a refinery of such scale.
He explained that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project continued against all odds, adapting to unprecedented challenges. Today, the Dangote Refinery, which meets global standards and produces Euro V petroleum products, has the capability to refine over 100 different types of crude oil despite the shortage of Nigerian crude.
Vice President, Oil & Gas, Edwin Devakumar, highlighted the monumental scale of the refinery, which boasts a 650,000-barrel-per-day capacity. He revealed that the Dangote Group undertook the role of its own Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor—a feat never before attempted in a project of this magnitude.
“Our Group President has a plaque in his office that reads, ‘nothing is impossible.’ This is the mindset he instilled in us when faced with challenges. He does not accept impossibilities and always aims for excellence. This approach was the same when we revolutionised the cement industry in Nigeria. We turned the country from one of the largest importers of cement into a net exporter”.
According to Devakumar, the refinery is now positioned to meet Nigeria’s refined product demands, while also exporting surplus supplies of jet A1 fuel, gasoline, and diesel. Other key by-products include polypropylene, carbon black feedstock, and sulphur.
A Testimony to Vision, Innovation, and Impact
The refinery’s construction was no small feat, requiring the dredging of 65 million cubic meters of sand to elevate the site by 1.5 meters—a precaution against potential sea level rises due to climate change. The project also necessitated the acquisition of 330 cranes and lifting equipment due to the lack of local capacity, as well as the creation of the world’s largest granite quarry to supply building materials. The entire complex was built on 250,000 foundation piles, possibly the highest number ever used in a single project.
The scholars, after touring the massive facility, were visibly awed by Dangote’s vision and its real-world impact. They described the visit as the highlight of their tour, which also included stops in Ghana and Abuja.
Dangote’s Achievements as a Symbol of Nigeria’s Economic Transformation
Sheffy Kolade, leader of the Harvard Kennedy School student-led Nigeria-Ghana Trek, praised Dangote’s work, stating that it embodies Nigeria’s resilience and economic transformation.
“The Dangote Group is not just a business. It is a symbol of Nigeria’s resilience. It represents the extraordinary achievements possible when we put our minds to something. I am happy that we are here to witness the economic progress happening in Nigeria. We’ve seen the largest single-train refinery in the world, and we’ve visited a fertiliser plant that exports to South America and the US.”
Kolade, a social entrepreneur and a Forbes Business Council member, further highlighted the impact of Dangote’s businesses on job creation and energy security.
“From where we are standing, thousands of people earn their daily livelihood. This business has created numerous jobs and ensured energy security for our country. It has reduced our reliance on imported petroleum products and is increasing our foreign reserves. I want to thank you, sir, for everything you’re doing for our country and for Africa. It’s truly inspiring.”
A Lesson in Determination for Future Leaders
Another scholar, Darrow Merton, a Foreign Service Officer with the United States, described Dangote’s resilience and visionary approach as an inspiration to entrepreneurs worldwide.
Dangote’s engagement with the scholars was more than just a discussion; it was a call to action for the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs. His message underscored the importance of determination, strategic knowledge, and the ability to break barriers in pursuit of transformative goals.
The Bigger Picture: Why This Matters
Dangote’s story is more than just a business success—it is a blueprint for industrialization in Africa. His projects boost economic self-reliance, create jobs, reduce import dependency, and enhance energy security. The significance of such a mission cannot be overstated:
Job Creation: Thousands of people now have employment through Dangote’s projects, contributing to economic stability.
Energy Security: Nigeria is no longer at the mercy of fuel imports.
Foreign Exchange Savings & Exports: The refinery not only meets local demand but also generates revenue through exports.
Inspiration for Young Entrepreneurs: The success of the Dangote Group shows that Africans can lead large-scale industrial projects, breaking the reliance on foreign entities.
Dangote’s bold vision, against all odds, stands as a testament to what is possible with ambition, strategic execution, and resilience. His message to young entrepreneurs is clear: dream big, embrace challenges, and push the boundaries of possibility.
