The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has affirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health following reports of a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China and other regions. In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of the NCDC, outlined the agency’s proactive measures to address any potential threats.

Dr. Idris emphasized that while the World Health Organization (WHO) has not classified HMPV as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the NCDC is closely monitoring global developments in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

“Nigeria’s National Influenza Sentinel Surveillance (NISS) system has not detected any unusual increase in respiratory infections locally,” Dr. Idris said, reassuring the public that no cases of HMPV have been reported in the country.

Surveillance and Preventive Measures

The NCDC has enhanced its nationwide surveillance for respiratory infections, including HMPV, through its network of sentinel sites. The agency has urged healthcare providers to report any unusual spikes in respiratory illnesses and stressed the importance of adopting preventive measures:   Regular handwashing with soap and water, wearing masks in crowded spaces, and  staying home when feeling unwell. These measures align with global best practices to curb the spread of respiratory infections.

Global Developments

The outbreak in China, which has overwhelmed hospitals and sparked global concern, has raised questions about transparency and preparedness. Videos circulating on social media show overcrowded hospitals, drawing comparisons to China’s handling of the initial COVID-19 outbreak.

While the WHO has acknowledged the rise in acute respiratory infections in China, particularly among children, it has not released specific data on HMPV. Experts like Dr. Sanjaya Senanayake from the Australian National University have called for China to share genomic data to confirm the virus’s identity and detect any mutations.

In other regions, India’s Health Ministry and Malaysia’s health authorities have ramped up monitoring, while the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a rise in HMPV cases. Despite these reports, health agencies globally, including the USCDC, maintain that the virus does not pose a significant threat compared to previous outbreaks like COVID-19.

Understanding HMPV

Human Metapneumovirus, first identified in 2001, belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). It causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections, with symptoms ranging from mild (coughing, fever, sore throat) to severe (wheezing, difficulty breathing). Vulnerable groups include young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic respiratory conditions.

The virus spreads through respiratory droplets, close contact, and contaminated surfaces. Preventive measures remain the cornerstone of public health responses.

The Need for Government Action

The NCDC’s vigilance and proactive measures are commendable. However, this situation underscores the importance of sustained investment in Nigeria’s health infrastructure and surveillance systems. Transparency and global collaboration, as emphasized by international health experts, are essential for addressing emerging threats like HMPV. The Federal Government should strengthen partnerships and ensure resources are readily available to mitigate risks and protect public health.
