NCDMB: CATALYZING NIGERIA’S GAS REVOLUTION AND EMPOWERING LOCAL BUSINESSES TO PLAY KEY ROLE

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to making natural gas the cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy transition, leveraging its abundance to fuel industrial growth and promote sustainability.

Speaking at the 13th Practical Nigerian Content (PNC) Forum in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, highlighted the strategic role of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in advancing this agenda.

The Minister underscored the importance of natural gas as both an economic driver and a critical component in achieving energy security. Through initiatives like the Decade of Gas, the government has laid a robust foundation for harnessing gas resources, completing significant infrastructure projects, and fostering investment in gas-based industries. Notable achievements include the commissioning of gas plants with a combined capacity of 600 million standard cubic feet per day and the near-completion of key pipelines such as the OB3 and AKK, which promise to unlock vast opportunities for local businesses.

Local content remains central to this vision. Rt. Hon. Ekpo emphasized that the government is creating avenues for indigenous companies to play pivotal roles in gas distribution, processing, and power generation.

He highlighted the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative as a transformative program designed to reduce reliance on petrol while spurring local innovation. With over $450 million invested in CNG infrastructure and thousands of technicians trained, the initiative demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to fostering public-private partnerships that elevate Nigeria’s energy profile.

The Honourable Minister also commended the NCDMB for its unwavering support of local content through initiatives like the Nigerian Oil and Gas Parks Scheme (NOGaPS). These parks, envisioned as hubs for gas industry innovation and employment generation, have the potential to transform Nigeria’s industrial landscape. Rt. Hon. Ekpo urged the NCDMB to expedite the operationalization of these parks, emphasizing their importance in attracting investments and enhancing the local manufacture of critical gas components.

“I must commend the NCDMB for its visionary Nigerian Oil and Gas Parks Scheme (NOGaPS). These parks play a critical role in promoting innovation, industry, and employment creation. These parks need to reach their full potential. To guarantee that the parks are developed into hubs for the gas industry, I implore the NCDMB to give top priority to collaborations with businesses that produce gas components, such as compressors, valves, and fittings. I also applaud the NCDMB’s investments in gas-related projects, including support for compressed natural gas (CNG) projects, modular gas processing plants, manufacturing plants for LPG cylinders, LPG depots, LPG terminals, LPG storage and bottling plants, gas gathering facilities, smart gas and smoke detector alarm services, and more. In addition, I challenge the Board to open and make fully operational most of these parks by 3rd quarter 2025 at the latest.

“These are laudable efforts that demonstrate the Board’s commitment to aligning local content development with the national gas agenda of Mr. President. I encourage the NCDMB to ensure that these investments become operational and yield the intended results, thereby demonstrating the economic and developmental impact of their initiatives” he said.

Collaboration remains key to realizing these ambitious goals. The Minister pointed to the successful Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement for the Brass Fertilizer and Petrochemical Project as a testament to the power of stakeholder alignment. This project is expected to supply fertilizer for agricultural productivity while bolstering Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings through exports.

Rt. Hon. Ekpo called on stakeholders to capitalize on Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves to accelerate local content development and industrial growth. He urged the NCDMB to maintain its leadership in this regard, ensuring that its initiatives align with global energy transition goals. “The journey towards a sustainable energy future is one we must walk together,” he affirmed, urging businesses and investors to seize the opportunities presented by Nigeria’s gas sector.

In conclusion, the Honourable Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s steadfast dedication to advancing local content as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy strategy. He commended the NCDMB for its achievements while challenging it to set even higher benchmarks for innovation and impact. The PNC Forum, he said, should serve as a platform for generating practical ideas that drive Nigeria toward a more sustainable and prosperous energy future.
