Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has weighed in on the ongoing public discourse surrounding the Tax Reform Bills currently under consideration. In a statement on his X Page he emphasized the need for a fiscal system that embodies justice, fairness, and equity, reflecting the concerns of Nigerians from diverse backgrounds.
A Call for Equity in Fiscal Policy
Abubakar highlighted the unified demand from Nigerians for a fiscal system that does not deepen the disparities among the nation’s federating units. He noted that while reforms are necessary, they should not disproportionately benefit a select few states while disadvantaging others. According to him, the core principle of equity must underpin any reform, ensuring balanced development across the federation.
Transparency and Inclusivity in Public Hearings
Urging objectivity and transparency, Atiku underscored the importance of the public hearings being conducted by the National Assembly. He stressed that transparency in these deliberations is not just a procedural requirement but a cornerstone of accountability, good governance, and public trust in policy-making. He advocated for an inclusive approach, urging the National Assembly to ensure participation from all relevant stakeholders, including civil society organizations, traditional institutions, public officials, politicians, and subject matter experts.
Leveraging National Economic Council Resolutions
In his appeal, Atiku called on the National Assembly to revisit and publicize the resolutions of the National Economic Council (NEC), an advisory body constitutionally empowered to counsel the President on economic matters. He emphasized that the NEC’s input is crucial for shaping reforms that are economically sound and representative of the collective interests of Nigerians.

Concluding his statement, Atiku urged lawmakers to ensure that the final provisions of the Tax Reform Bills are aligned with the aspirations and interests of the majority of Nigerians.
