Boniface, who made his debut for Nigeria under Jose Peseiro and later played under Finidi George, is set to compete in the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers under another home-based coach, Augustine Eguavoen. Despite Nigeria’s AFCON 2013 triumph under the late Stephen Keshi, many fans remain skeptical about having a home-based coach lead such a talented squad, believing that a foreign coach might better harness the team’s potential. However, Boniface disagrees with this perspective, dismissing the criticism of coaches, whether local or foreign.
“The truth is even if we bring Guardiola, Nigerians will still have something to say, but I’m a type of person that doesn’t care about what people think, because we’re they’re not here with the team. Our job is to give it all on the pitch, and that’s it. It’s life. People will always criticize. So, no matter which coach you bring, people always have something to say,” said the Bayer Leverkusen star in a chat with Football Fans Tribe.
The striker led the charge for the Super Eagles of Nigeria for almost 80 minutes during their AFCON 2025 group qualification opener, where the Super Eagles crushed Benin Republic 3-0 in Uyo on Saturday.
Boniface’s performance in the match against Benin Republic is commendable even though he failed to score. He showcased his skills and determination on the field. His ability to link up with his teammates and create scoring opportunities was evident. This would further solidify his place in the team. As Nigeria prepares for the next round of AFCON qualifiers, expectations are high for Boniface to continue his impressive form.
Looking ahead, the striker remains focused on contributing to the team’s success, regardless of who is at the helm. With a string of strong performances, Boniface is proving that talent and hard work can transcend the debate over local versus foreign coaching, reinforcing the idea that the players’ dedication on the pitch is what ultimately matters.
