Abuja, Nigeria – In a decisive move to revamp Nigeria’s security architecture, President Bola Tinubu has announced a major overhaul of the nation’s military leadership. The Presidential directive, released on October 24, confirmed the replacement of the Service Chiefs, with all appointments taking immediate effect.
General Olufemi Oluyede has been named the new Chief of Defence Staff, taking over from General Christopher Musa. In the Army, Major-General W. Shaibu steps in as the new Chief of Army Staff. Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke assumes the role of Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas becomes the Chief of Naval Staff. Meanwhile, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation to General Musa and other outgoing officials for what he called their ‘patriotic service and dedicated leadership’, stating that the changes are vital to strengthening the country’s operational capabilities.
The President charged the newly appointed military chiefs to bring fresh vigour and focus into the fight against security threats across the country. Nigeria continues to battle insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, separatist unrest in the southeast, oil theft in the Niger Delta, and rising violent crime nationwide.
This restructuring, analysts say, is expected to realign defence strategy and enhance inter-agency cooperation. However, experts also caution that leadership changes alone will not address escalating insecurity without improved intelligence, better funding, and stronger accountability frameworks.
Observers will be watching how the new military hierarchy prioritises operations and morale among the ranks at a time when national security remains a top concern for millions of Nigerians.
The message from the Presidency is clear: new faces, renewed expectations— and the hope that Nigeria’s armed forces can deliver improved safety and stability.
